Transaction categorization
Part of our features guides.
Transaction Categorization
Nova automatically organizes your transactions into categories so you can see exactly where your money goes — without the manual work.
How Auto-Categorization Works
When transactions sync from your connected accounts, Charlie (Nova's AI) analyzes the merchant name, amount, and patterns to assign each transaction to the right category. Common categories include Groceries, Dining, Transportation, Shopping, Entertainment, and more.
Charlie gets smarter over time. When you correct a category, Charlie remembers your preference and applies it to similar future transactions.
Manually Recategorizing a Transaction
If Charlie gets one wrong, it's easy to fix:
- Go to Transactions from the main menu
- Find the transaction you want to update
- Tap the transaction to open its details
- Tap the Category field
- Select the correct category from the list
- Tap Save
Charlie will learn from your correction and improve for next time.
Creating Custom Categories
Nova's default categories cover most spending, but you can add your own:
- Go to Settings → Categories
- Tap + New Category
- Enter a name and choose an icon and color
- Tap Save
Custom categories are available everywhere — budgets, reports, and transaction filtering.
Splitting Transactions
Need to split a single transaction across multiple categories? SuperNova subscribers can:
- Open the transaction details
- Tap Split Transaction
- Allocate amounts to different categories
- Tap Save
This is perfect for warehouse store trips or shared expenses.
Tips
- Review weekly to catch any miscategorized transactions early
- Be consistent — the more you correct, the better Charlie gets
- Use custom categories for spending you want to track closely
