I've been fascinated with finance and net worth tracking for most of my life. I was an early adopter of Mint, tracking everything meticulously from the start. When Intuit shuttered it in favor of Credit Karma, I lost not just a tool, but the depth of insight I'd come to rely on. I tried alternatives over the years, but they all fell short. Each one had gaps that frustrated me. I kept thinking: there has to be something better.
But this isn't just about software.
My parents divorced when I was eleven. My mother was left with me, six younger siblings, and no work history. She'd spent her adult life as a dedicated stay-at-home mother, now thrust into a world where she had to somehow provide for eight people on her own.
I remember the weight of it, even then. Not just the logistical impossibility of it — one person raising seven children alone — but the stress it created. I watched it consume her. And at that young age, I identified what was driving that stress more than anything else: money.
I watched financial uncertainty corrode everything — family stability, parental confidence, my mother's health. That experience taught me something fundamental: financial clarity is the foundation of peace of mind. When you don't know where your money stands, you can't make plans. You can't build confidence. You can't protect the people you care about.
I joined the Marine Corps after high school — partly because I was terrified of college and homework, but mostly because I needed structure and a way forward. After boot camp, I had something I'd never had before: savings and a guaranteed paycheck. For someone who'd grown up watching financial chaos, that stability felt revolutionary.
Over the years, through military service and transitioning to civilian life, I've become obsessed with mastery over personal finances. Not for greed, but for the security and freedom it creates. For the ability to make choices rather than react to circumstances. For the peace of mind I want my family to have.
Every tool I've tried has treated net worth tracking like an afterthought — a minor feature buried in a broader platform. But net worth tracking isn't a feature. It's a foundation.
Nova exists because I believe everyone deserves:
I'm not building Nova for the investors or the quarterly metrics. I'm building it for the single parent struggling to keep the lights on. For the young professional trying to break the cycle of their upbringing. For anyone who's felt the weight of financial uncertainty and wants something better.
“Nova is my way of giving others what I wish I could have given my mother: clarity, control, and the confidence that comes with truly understanding your financial position.”
